Authentic replica of a late medieval pot helmet as worn in the 12th-14th centuries.
The so-called pot helmet (also called bucket helmet or great helmet) emerged in the High Middle Ages around the 12th/13th century and was worn primarily by knights during the Crusades.
With its full head and face covering, it offered particularly high protection against sword blows, arrows, and spears. A characteristic feature is the brass or iron cross on the front, which not only served as reinforcement but also symbolized Christian chivalry.
During the 14th century, the Topf helmet was increasingly replaced by lighter and more mobile helmet forms (e.g. bascinet, sallet), but remained an iconic symbol of the Crusader period.
